One Room Challenge: Week 1

Hello everyone! Welcome to Kramer Street blog! Not only is this week one of the One Room Challenge, this is our first ever blog post! My husband Mike and I (Liz) are renovating our 1923 bungalow in Milwaukee, WI, while sharing the journey on Instagram and now, on this blog!

The One Room Challenge, is a bi-annual celebration of design and creativity in which 20 featured design bloggers renovate a room in 6 weeks. Each designer shares their inspiration, process, tips and sources via their blog and/or Instagram every Wednesday until the final reveal on November 12th. This event is full of joy and so much talent, so be sure to check out all of the featured designers for the Fall 2020 season here.

Something that is super fun about the One Room Challenge, is that you can enter as a guest participant…and that is how Kramer Street gets to be involved! Guest participants will publish progress posts every Thursday, and you can follow along with all of the guest participants here.

We have been renovating our house room by room for about a year. We have poured so much love and energy into this home, and we have made a lot of progress! So far, we have completed the renovation of our guest bedroom and main bathroom. We have added a mudroom and powder room and updated the exterior. We also have many projects in process including our living room, kitchen and dining room. Be sure to check out our gallery to see AFTER photos of our fully completed spaces.

Despite the fact that our kitchen, living room and dining room are currently under construction, for the One Room Challenge we are going to tackle our bedroom and two walk-in closets! This space has been in true survival mode from the day we moved in. We spend our time and energy on the rest of the house, while this room does the bare minimum of housing our bed and our clothes. I think it’s time to change that, yes?! Below are some BEFORE photos of our bedroom.

I want our new bedroom to accomplish a lot, while making it look easy. What do I mean by that?

This room should…

  • feel clean, calm, luxurious, and inviting

  • promote connection and rest

  • engage all five senses

  • be personal to our story

  • inspire us and bring our minds to the best of times

That is a lot for one room to handle! But, I feel confident we can do it; and over the next 6 weeks, I will show you how. Starting with our design plan below.

The color palette is where the magic begins. White, grey, black, wood tones and mossy green. This palette is neutral, but bold, and our finishing touches will add a hint of glam.

Natural wood elements, such as the shelf above the bed, dresser, and nightstands, paired with live plants throughout the space, give this room elements of nature that make us feel grounded and energized at the same time. Items like the Capiz chandelier, bedside lamps and soft velvet pillows, provide elements of glamour that make us feel like we’re sleeping at luxury hotel. The black vertical shiplap wall anchors the room while providing visual interest, and the cozy bed linens and a soft headboard make this space feel oh-so inviting.

Thank you for following along with us. I’m excited to show you the progress we make next week!
