Hi Everyone! I cannot believe it is already Week 2 of the One Room Challenge! Time really flies when you’re renovating! If you found us through the ORC, My husband Mike and I (Liz) are renovating our 1923 bungalow in Milwaukee, WI, while sharing the journey on Instagram and now, on this blog!
In case you missed it, we are renovating our primary bedroom for the ORC! You can checkout our mood board below, and read about the full design plan in the Week 1 blog post.
This week, we are discussing demo and closet design! Luckily, compared to other areas of our house, the demo for this room was not that extensive. We needed to remove all base board trim, crown molding, existing closet organizers, doors, and the ceiling fan.
With Demo out of the way, we have the blank slate we need to start beautifying this place!
Now, let’s talk closets! Each closet has a footprint of about 12’x4’. However, the ceiling starts sloping with the roof line at 4 feet. Given the odd space, it is important to me that we are intentional with the closet organizers so that we get the most out of every inch.
The first thing we did was go through our clothes and donate what we no longer need. Then I looked over our remaining items and made lists of what we need to store.
For Mike: hanging clothes, socks, t-shirts, sweaters, shorts, pants, workout clothes, pajamas, shoes, hats, belts, ties, misc. accessories.
For Me: hanging clothes, full length hanging clothes, t-shirts, pants, sweaters, workout clothes, socks, tights, pajamas, shoes, bags, purses, jewelry
For the most part, our storage solutions can be the same, with a few differences.
Mike needs less hanging space than I do and does not need full-length hanging space. Mike also needs space to store hats, ties and belts.
I do need full-length hanging space and I also need space to store jewelry and purses.
Because each closet is a mini room, I made mood boards for both of them!
I want these closets to feel cohesive while also being personal to each of us. In order to do this we will use custom White Pax Wardrobes from Ikea in both closets along with the same wallpaper. From there, I’ll add items to make my closet feel more feminine (jewelry stand, gold mirror, soft storage bench) and Mike’s closet to feel more masculine (leather/wood hat hooks, leather bench with shoe storage underneath, sleek black mirror).
Thanks again for following along with us! Week 3 will bring a lot of progress for this room, so be sure to stop by next Thursday! Also, be sure to check out Featured Designers weekly updates here, and Guest Participants weekly updates here.
